Fillings and crowns

A filling repairs a tooth with a cavity or a small break. A crown covers a tooth that is too damaged for a filling. Dr. Urbina does both, and tells you which she thinks the tooth needs and why.

What happens

A filling is usually one visit. A crown is usually two, with a temporary crown between.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Look and talk

A checkup, and an X-ray if she needs one. You hear the options and the estimate.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Numb the area

A local anesthetic, and a short wait until the tooth is numb.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Repair the tooth

She removes the decay or the break and rebuilds the tooth, or shapes it for a crown.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Check your bite

You bite down, and she adjusts the tooth until it feels right.

Comfort, choices and care

  • Comfort

You are numb for the repair, and you can raise a hand for a break any time. Some people feel pressure or a little sensitivity to cold afterward.

  • If you wait

A cavity that isn't repaired usually grows. A filling can turn into a crown, and a tooth that is lost needs a larger repair. You can also choose to watch a small spot; Dr. Urbina will say what she would watch for.

  • Risks and after-care

Wait until the numbness is gone before you chew, so you don't bite your cheek. The tooth can be sensitive for a few days. Call us if your bite feels high, if pain grows, or if a temporary crown comes off.

  • How it's billed

Plans usually pay part of fillings and crowns, up to a yearly limit. We write an estimate that shows the plan's share and yours. Without insurance you get the fee in writing first.

Questions about fillings and crowns

How long does a filling take?

It depends on the tooth. Dr. Urbina tells you before she starts, and we allow time for the numbing to work.

Will my plan pay for a crown?

Many plans pay part, up to a yearly limit, and some have waiting periods. We check yours and show you the estimate before we start.

What if I'd rather wait?

That is your decision. Dr. Urbina tells you what could change and what to watch for, and you can book when you're ready.
